In a new research project at the Helmholtz Association in Germany, we develop a solution for automated software publication with rich metadata. The project develops software that can be used in continuous integration workflows to harvest metadata from the repository and different platform APIs, collate them, and deposit them in publication repositories such as InvenioRDM (on which Zenodo is built) and Dataverse. These workflows make it easier for research software authors to create software publications for potentially many software versions that contain all the metadata needed to enable better findability of the software, and reproducibility of results through providing access to specific versions of software that was used to create research results, and also enable them to receive credit for their software work without having to do repetetive manual publication for each version.

The HERMES project (ZT-I-PF-3-006) was funded by the Initiative and Networking Fund of the Helmholtz Association in the framework of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration 2020 project call.
